Nonallergic Food Reactions

Nonallergic Food Reactions
In contrast to the true allergic reactions, any of the individualistic adverse reactions to food do not involved reactions of the immune system. These include:
• Metabolic Food Reaction
• Anaphylactoid Reaction
• Allergy-Like Food Intoxication
• Secondary Food Sensitivity
• Food Idiosyncrasy
• Food Sensitivity

Metabolic Food Reaction
Metabolic food reaction is an adverse reaction to a food or food component that results from a defect in metabolism (the processes by which a substance is handled in the body).

These reactions have also been called “food intolerances,” An example would be lactose intolerance due to a deficiency of the essential enzyme lactase, which is essential for metabolism of the milk sugar, lactose.

Those with lactose intolerance develop nausea, gas, and diarrhea if milk or certain other dairy products are consumed.

Anaphylactoid Reactions
Anaphylactoid reaction is an adverse reaction to a food or food component caused by eating substance that will release from the body’s cellular stores the chemical mediators (or “triggers”) of allergic reactions, such as histamine (but without the interaction with IgE that occurs in food anaphylaxis).

Several foods, including strawberries, shellfish, and chocolate, can allegedly induce such reactions.
