Main elements of minerals

Minerals are the constituents which remain as ash after the incineration of plant and animal tissue.

They may be divided into two categories:
Main elements
Trace elements

The main elements (Na, K, Ca, Mg, Cl, P) are essential for human beings in amounts >50 mg/day. Sulfur also belongs to this group. These elements are needed for critical  functions that include electrolytes balance signal transduction, enzyme function, energy metabolism and bone formation and maintenance.

These elements also can have detrimental effects when intakes exceed homeostatic control mechanisms.

Calcium and phosphorus account for about 75% of the mineral elements in the body, and each of them has a number of essential functions to perform. Hence, the body must receive a sufficient supply of each of them if it is to remain healthy.
